Measuring Our Class Alligator!

The First Grade is practicing measuring in inches and feet!  We have been measuring a rubber alligator that grows in water each day.  The students are so excited to see how many inches the alligator has grown.  The students have been recording the alligator's growth on a chart.  We are getting very good at measuring using our rulers.

Friendship Workshop!

The First Graders have enjoyed hearing friendship stories and talking about ways to be a good friend each Friday for the past three weeks in a workshop lead by Mrs. Janos.  The boys and girls have engaged in converstaion about friendship, dealing with a bully, and ways to work through conflict!  Our new class motto is "If you want to have a friend, be one!"

Flat Stanley Visits the First Grade!

The girls and boys in First Grade enjoyed the funny story of Flat Stanley, by Jeff Brown, so much that we decided to take him on some adventures of our own!  He went on a camping trip, visited the Art Institute, and even played with a new puppy!  Here are some pictures of our students and their fabulous projects:

Parent/Teacher Conferences!

I look forward to meeting with all the first grade parents this Wednesday afternoon and evening!  We are offering parents a chance to write a special letter to their children and put it in the 1-3 grade mailbox.  Write a few words to your children before or after your child's conference.  All the supplies you need will be available in the hallway!  We will be giving the students their letters when they come back from Easter Break!

Talent Show Stars!

The talented students at SJB did skits, sang, and showed off their art skills!  Here are some of the first grade students that participated in the talent show last week:

Math Fun!

The Students enjoyed ordering the numbers from 1 to 100 as a game in a math lesson last week.  The girls and boys had to put themselves in order as they received a number.  The students are also enjoying working as a team to sort all numbers from 1-100 in the Math Center!

The First Grade Bar Graph

The boys and girls in First Grade made a special bar graph.  The title of the graph is "Number of Children in our Families."  We made observations about the graph and talked about how everyones family is unique and special! The students identified which category had the most, fewest, and we practiced telling how many more in each category:

First Grade Glimmer Auction Item

We had so much fun working wtih Jessyka's mom, Ms. Denise on our Glimmer Auction Item.  We made a dart board that uses velcro balls instead of darts!  The students had fun gluing down the felt on the board and decorating the balls with their fingerprints.  We hope it gets a lot of bids at the Glimmer Auction on March 21st!  Thank you Ms. Denise and Mrs. Joyce for helping us with this special project.

Estimation!

The First Graders enjoyed estimating jelly beans on the 101st day of First Grade!  The boys and girls had to guess which jar had 101 jelly beans.  Then, Sr. Joyce came in to help us count them and put them in groups of 10!
